Lamba Weekend

Leave optimizer

Tell it how many days of leave you can take. It finds the longest single break those days can buy, or the set of long weekends that gives you the most days off in total.

Whole days, 1 to 60.

Period
Goal

The longest breaks you can make in 2027 with up to 5 leave days (Saturday and Sunday off):

How the optimizer works

First it lays out every day of the period as either a day off (your weekly off, a central holiday, a restricted holiday you picked, or a holiday you added) or a working day. Leave can only go on working days from today onwards. Dates are calendar days in India Standard Time.

One long break

For every place a break could begin, it walks forward through the calendar. Each working day it meets costs one leave day; days off cost nothing. When the leave runs out it keeps going through any days off that follow, then stops at the next working day. Every stretch found this way is ranked by length. When two are equally long, the one that needs fewer leave days comes first, then the earlier one. The list shows options that do not overlap, so you see different times of the year.

Worked example. With 3 leave days in 2027 and Saturday and Sunday off, the longest break is Sat 20 – Sun 28 Mar 2027: 9 days, with leave on Mon 22 Mar, Wed 24 Mar and Thu 25 Mar. Holi (Tue 23 Mar) and Good Friday (Fri 26 Mar) fill the other weekdays.

Several long weekends

Here the question is different: how should the leave be spread so that the most days fall inside breaks of at least the length you choose? The optimizer lists every possible break with its cost in leave days. A break always begins and ends next to a working day you keep, so two chosen breaks never run into each other. It then picks the combination of breaks with the most days off in total that fits within your leave, using dynamic programming: it moves through the calendar one day at a time and remembers, for every amount of leave, the best total so far. The answer is exact for the dates and holidays you gave it. If two plans tie, it prefers the one that uses less leave.

Worked example. With 5 leave days in 2027, Saturday and Sunday off and breaks of at least 3 days, the best plan uses 5 leave days for 5 breaks and 21 days off in total: Sat 23 – Tue 26 Jan 2027 (4 days); Sat 20 – Tue 23 Mar 2027 (4 days); Thu 25 – Sun 28 Mar 2027 (4 days); Thu 15 – Mon 19 Apr 2027 (5 days); Fri 14 – Mon 17 May 2027 (4 days).
