Rules that come with the list
- No substitute holidays. If a holiday falls on a weekly off or another non-working day, or two festivals fall on the same day, no substitute day is given (para 3.2).
- Moon-dependent dates. For offices in Delhi/New Delhi, the dates of Id-ul-Fitr, Id-ul-Zuha, Muharram and Id-e-Milad may be changed by the Ministry of Personnel after checking with the Government of NCT of Delhi; changes at short notice may be announced through PIB, TV, AIR or newspapers (paras 5.1 and 5.3).
- Diwali. During 2026, Diwali (Deepavali) falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026. In States where only Naraka Chaturdasi is the compulsory Diwali holiday for State Government offices, central offices there may observe the holiday on Naraka Chaturdasi instead (para 6).
- Offices outside Delhi/New Delhi observe 14 compulsory holidays plus three chosen from 12 optional occasions by the Central Government Employees Welfare Coordination Committee in the State capital, so their list differs (paras 2 and 3.1). See how holiday lists differ.
Moon-dependent dates do move: DoPT's order F. No. 12/3/2023-JCA of 22 May 2026 moved the Delhi/New Delhi holiday for Id-ul-Zuha (Bakrid) from 27 May 2026 to 28 May 2026.
